Homerville was founded by the generosity of Dr. John Homer Mattox, who settled in this area in 1853 and donated land for Atlantic & Gulf Railroad.  Originally named "Station No 11" by the railroad, Homerville grew from a railroad town to the bustling county seat by 1860.

Today, Homerville boasts many strengths and assets of larger communities, but has managed to maintain the sense of hospitality, quality, and community of our history.  Homerville is proud of the following:

  • Becoming a Certified Local Government
  • Designing a City of Ethics
  • Nationally Accredited Better Hometown Community
  • Deemed one of Coastal Georgia's "Five Great Small Cities" in the 2012 Georgia Travel Guide
  • Becoming a Certified Work Ready Community
  • Becoming a Camera Ready Community
  • Having two industrial parks located in the city limits with more than 250 acres
  • Having an airport that is Federal Aviation Administration Compliant and has a fuel station
  • Clinch Memorial Hospital was named the 3rd hospital in the state for customer satisfaction in 2008 and offers telemed programs
  • Newly completed downtown streetscape project with more than 900 commemorative brick pavers
  • Home of the Huxford Genealogical Library, on of the five largest private genealogical libraries in the United States
  • Police Department with qualified officers who maintain our low crime rate
  • Highly trained Water Department that has undergone several upgrades in the last year
  • Fire Department that participates in extensive on-going trainings
  • City Hall has improved the water billing system, increased efficiency, and has friendly staff available to assist with taxes, businesses, and more.
