Homerville was founded by the generosity of Dr. John Homer Mattox, who settled in this area in 1853 and donated land for Atlantic & Gulf Railroad. Originally named "Station No 11" by the railroad, Homerville grew from a railroad town to the bustling county seat by 1860.
